In Case You Aren’t Experiencing Millie Overload
Here are some frames from her swim class this morning.
It’s her third week. If I do say so myself, she is rockin’ this swim class into next Wednesday.
She told me she was going to go under water for FIVE seconds.
She’s a brave and bold little bug.

Don’t hold your breath, folks. It doesn’t get much cuter than these two girls!

Mills was having fun with those goggles!

And the flippers made her feel like a real fish.

My brave little girl went down the BIG SLIDE and I couldn’t be more proud.

Too much Millie comes right after too much chocolate and too much red wine…NEVER!!
Love ‘ya, Mills. Pa and Gran
I wish I had a cute kid to blog… Love the first one.
Just Playin’
Yesterday I was supposed to photograph a baby, but had to reschedule. I was bummed and really jonesin’ to shoot all day! Lately I have just been so super inspired, so I decided to turn my energy to my main muse, the Mills. I just love my time with her, which often consists of way too many accessories, listening to Taylor Swift (she knows all the words), acting like we are in theater class (making all sorts of faces in the mirror), reading our fave books, and loads of laughter.
Here’s a typical evening with Millie.

love her!
I love her more and more with every picture!
What an angel! Love ‘ya MIlls!!
three cheers to creative folks. Mills is so adorable. can’t wait to see what all she comes up with in the future! ![]()

Sarah + Ben :: Engaged
”The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place: from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape, from a spider’s web.” — Picasso.
Though I love people of all shapes, colors, sizes, and personalities, I feel most at ease when I am amongst kindred spirits. Sarah and Ben are also artists, and there is something comforting knowing that they understand that need to create and to express, just as I do. Sarah, long legs and a heart of gold, is a beautiful dancer who moves through life with the grace of a gazelle. It’s no wonder why heartthrob and musician Ben, with the warmth of the sun in his smile and a voice sent from the heavens, is so enamored with her. These kids are about to graduate from SMU, and will embrace the real world by each others’ sides come May. I can’t wait to see what Sarah and Ben end up doing…whatever it is will be fabulous!
We hung out for a bit inside Bubba’s, a comfort food cafe near the SMU campus.

Are they the cutest or are they the cutest???

Adorable.

Striking, aren’t they?

Sarah and Ben twirled in front of the building they spend most of their time in on campus.

The way Ben dotes on Sarah is precious.

I almost died and went to heaven when this European chick with a rad orange scarf came up to get something out of one of the lockers. You guys know how I LOVE other people in my portraits. She was quite confused when I asked her to stay for a second!

Favorite! (Hey, I can have 3 or 37. It’s my blog!)

Oh! I love love love this one, too!

Ben found a piano and sang to Sarah. Sorry ladies, he is WAY taken.

Can you believe those eyes? Insanely beautiful, you are, Sarah!

Okay, so admittedly they ARE both amazing models to work with even if I am biased as Sarah’s mom! But you are an amazing professional! I have so enjoyed perusing your galleries on your website and enjoying the fun soundtrack that accompanies each set. You capture people SO authentically and yet in such unique, artistic ways, Kate. I absolutely love your work!! These photos and the wedding pics will be cherished in our family and in Lakeland, FL for many decades to come!
Grateful for your giftedness,

The Bravery
Millie is getting much more ambitious with each trip we take to the playground. Her climbing and swinging and sliding skills show me that my hovering is stopping NOTHING.
For the first time, last Sunday, I stopped hovering to photograph her in her element and love what I came up with. I revisited some of the things I learned from my team leader, Greg Gibson, at Foundation Workshop and put them to use. I stopped being that scared mom and scared photographer, grew a pair, and “shot the dogsh*t out of it”. I found myself working every angle and capturing things I haven’t even imagined before. It was beautiful and I was smiling while I was doing it, knowing what I was doing. To capture that raw bravery that a 3 year old has on the playground was exhilarating, and I consider myself blessed to have been an attendee of FW7.
What a treasure for Bobby and me, as old-timers, to be able to look at these images and hear Millie’s laugh and see the outfit that she picked out for herself. I love her more than ever, as she becomes more and more her own brave little person, just like her mommy.

Kate, Fun fun fun!!!
Congrats on your evolving ways, I bet there is much much more to come. How exciting, right??
Millie is beautiful
Be brave and let go !!!
Hugs,
Stacey D

Can I just say that I love Millie’s (or mommy’s) sense of style? She always looks so bohemian-fab.
These are adorable!
Kate! These are beautiful and I particularly love the way you worked this scene. I can tell because I have been to a playground and you have found so many great ways to frame your daughter in this space and still capture her true joy for play. Great job!
these are lovely kate! very fun! great framing on these shots.
my faves is the black and white backlit one of millie looking into the camera. very stark and lovely dimension to it. she just pops out of that image. ![]()

Darrah + Jared :: Engaged!
These two crazy kids are getting hitched in Punta Cana in a couple of weeks, but wanted to be sure to be captured first in their state of engagement! Darrah knows a girl who knows Candice of Candice + Chris, so she called me up last fall and got on the books. I am so glad she did! Darrah and Jared are sweetly sarcastic, which is right up my alley. They are cute as buttons and are so easy to hang out with and that makes me really sad that I’m not able to photograph their wedding.
I’d like to hit that. That’s what she said.
(Please note the pinata. I am not crazy, but am crazy funny.)

LOVE the expressions here! What super light and color!

Hilarious.

Very Parisian cafe, no?

Sweet and unfussy, just like them.

Love love love love love this. Favorite.

Another easy favorite! Good gosh, I love mirrors!

Those eyes are stunners, D!

Such a fun couple!

I can’t wait to hear all about your destination wedding adventures, D + J! Give me a shout when you return!
you are on fire, sistah!!
Crazy…I got your crazy!!!
Love it!
Noopsy Says…
Happy Tuesday!

Hope you had a wonderful long weekend. I know we did! Things are clicking along here at JP. Mom is getting me all organized and figuring out a better packaging and shipping system and we are rockin’ and rollin’. And what not.
Stay tuned tomorrow for a fabulous engagement session with Darrah and Jared!
Millie’s First Day of Swim Class
She’s always been a bit of a water bug since her earliest days in the bath tub. Millie was in heaven last summer as we visited our country club’s pool at least three times a week. However, this year, we decided that the floaties were not accessories we wanted to flaunt. It was time. Time to get lessons for Miss Independent so that she could really “do it herself” and Bobby and I could feel a little safer with her around pools.
When Hilarious Mandy mentioned that Sam was going to be taking lessons this spring, I jumped right on that bus. I tend to do that in most situations with Mandy, since she has a kindergartener and is a bit more experienced at the whole parenting game (read: she knows what the hell she’s doing). We signed Millie right up, and started yesterday.
Now, some of you may remember Millie’s rogue ballerina days. She sometimes would rather teach whatever class she is in instead of being taught, or maybe just pick clovers or chase butterflies or do whatever those little ADD kids do during extracurricular activities. Hoping to nip that behavior in the bud, I promised her that if she listened to her swim teacher and did everything she asks in her first class (we needed to set a good tone!) that she could get the Polly Pocket swimming pool complete with slide and dolphins. The outcome? She rocked it. Homegirl was no where near rogue. My Millie was the little mermaid I always knew she was. So, what’s she doing right now? Playing Polly Pocket. As soon as I finish this post I am going to join her!
We got there a little early, and just watched another kid get a lesson and waited for Sam.

The girls were chomping at the bit to get in the pool.

Behind the glass, Mills looked mostly at ease.

Their teacher, Miss Sarah, is a gem.

“I like it, Mom! I like it!” My sunny funny valentine did great!

Jackie + Justin :: Engaged!
It has been engagement session city around here the past few weeks and what a treat! It is always a blast to go out on the town and get a chance to bond with my brides and grooms before their big day. Jackie and Justin have the cutest little love story and I can’t wait for their wedding in June! It is going to be just DARLING!!!
Jackie is from Corpus Christi, the birthplace of WHATABURGER!

Just dance!

We had to go check out the 14th floor pool deck of the W Hotel, where Justin had proposed. I was just in photog paradise up there with the views and the light and the excitement from J + J as they recalled their last visit.

Jackie’s shoes were amazing Ralph Lauren pumps…I.could.squeal.

My Foundation Workshop Assignment
Last week, I attended the Foundation Workshop, which helps wedding and portrait photogs develop their photojournalism skills. To say it like that seems so dry, as I made so many new friends and feel like I have joined an amazingly warm and supportive community by attending. I also learned a ton about myself, the way I shoot, and how my psyche is most definitely involved, good or bad.
Each student was given an assignment in the DFW area to cover and create a story with images. I was assigned the McKinney Senior Recreational Center. I loved it so much that I am actually going to become a volunteer there! What an incredible community resource it is…I hope it is still around in oh, 30 years or so.
Here are some of my favorites from the assignment. I can’t post them all, but if you really really really want to see the full slideshow and you swear you aren’t going to go to Foundation Workshop in the next decade, then holla back and I will email you the link.

Thanks for lookin’!
that card shot is awesome!
These are so dang awesome. Well done, Kate!
Kate, these are astoundingly beautiful shots. I want to play dominoes. I want to be those women in the pool. I want that great gin rummy hand! Thank you.

Really great shots Kate! Your photos make me want to know the people in them. Fantastic job! I’m so excited you got to attend the workshop (and that you got to work with Ashley - you both inspire me so)
