Spoons Upstairs is Open!

Posted on July 5th, 2008 by Kate. Filed in Commercial

Just another feather in the proverbial Spoons Cafe cap has recently been put on display. Due to much interest in private parties, Spoons owner, Karen Klassen, decided to revamp part of the upstairs office space into a dining area. If I do say so myself, it is cozy, charming, and delicious in its own right.

I’d love to try this place - if only I could figure out a time they weren’t SO crowded! Your photos are the best advertisement a business could ask for.

Coronation Coordination

Posted on May 20th, 2008 by Kate. Filed in Kids, Commercial, A Life in the Day

Say THAT five times fast. This was THE SINGLE MOST CHOREOGRAPHED and COORDINATED event I have EVER photographed (thanks to countless hours put in by Betsy Newman, Lois Kohlkorst, Lela Kelley, and their troops).

Shooting it was a bit like taking an 8 hour wedding allotment and cramming it into a 2 1/2 hour period. The pace? Imagine photographing a basketball game…WHILE ON THE COURT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE GAME! (Dodge the ball, don’t trip the ref, watch out for that player!) Needless to say, I was so sore the next morning from sprinting and squatting and my hair was crunchy and my skin was parched…but oh, was it worth it! What a gig!

If only Millie could have been there to see the Hannah Montana act that Lois Kate and her friends did. To. Die. For.

Kate….That just took my breath away….Dag-Gum-It, girl….you are sooooo good! You just captured “Coronation Coordination”….Go Betsy, Go Lois, Go Lela, GO KATE!!!!! Love you….Mom

Lois Kolkhorst May 21st, 2008 at 1:13 am

Kate …I love what I’m seeing! Wow! You have really captured the essence of what Betsy and I set as our goal: make it all about the kids and let them have fun. We had a great team of volunteers we had that made the 118th Maifest, The Toy Store, come to life. And your pics say it all! I can’t wait to see them, each and everyone of them. I love your comments about your mom. She, Doc and Nan (& Ricky, too) have been very special to our family through the years. Doc, and especially Nancy, would love your artistic work with the camera. Keep up the GREAT work. Many thanks to you and your mom for making time for us in Big “B” Lots of love…Lois

Great job, Kate. If you can do this, you can do ANY thing.

Jane Barnhill May 21st, 2008 at 10:24 pm

The pictures are as great as the Maifest was…sometimes pictures don’t live up to the reality…but these certainly do. You took the pictures I’d hoped to see…up-down-all around…thank you, Kate! Love you…Jane B.

Don’t Rain on My Parade

Posted on May 20th, 2008 by Kate. Filed in Kids, Commercial, A Life in the Day

Now, normally, I am not a parade person. My lovely mother was a parade pusher when I was a child and it turned me off of them, much like her fruit pushing turned me off of fruit and her restrictive ways regarding television turned me into a TV junkie. If you think I am dissin’ Mom, please read the next post. ;-)

Anywho, sitting and watching is not really my bag. I am far too hyper for that. HOWEVER…SHOOTING A PARADE IS WAAAAAAAY DIFFERENT. I was in love with capturing the feeling of it all! The participants and spectators, to me, were all entertaining in their own right. The bands were playing some funky beats that had my booty shakin’ and the kids and costumes were too cute to boot. If I could photograph nothing but parades, I doubt I would ever get bored. They rock!

Sit back, and enjoy a parade on your computer. The Brenham Maifest’s Junior Parade is about to begin!

Our King, George Newman, gets “fixed up” by his beautiful toy soldier sister, Corrie.

Kate…..you soooo captured life on Maifest Friday in Brenham, Texas. The rhythms of life were all stepping out on this day! Love it! You, too! Mom

shelley May 20th, 2008 at 12:58 pm

Hey! I recognize some of those folks! Great capture of the flavor of Maifest. Makes me feel like I was there. . .

okay…I am so curious about the twister skirts. Can I see more of that “get-up” (as my grandfather would call it)? The rest of the shots are really fab too. as usual. :)

Kate — the picture of the “old women” could win a trophy! You really captured them. I could write a story on them and just their thoughts that moment!! Great work!

Kate, my favorite is the lady and her doggie. Was he growling? He’s too cute. : )

Fabulous job, Kate!! Now Beckett and Fletcher think they’re famous like Millie.

Martha Haydon Jun 2nd, 2008 at 11:35 am

Absolutely terrific! You captured the essence of Maifest and all the fun! Kate, you have a wonderful talent!…….and yes, your momma done you good! Susie has always been a phantastic photographer!
Since we were in Colo. Springs playing for a wedding and did not get to attend Maifest this year we especially appreciate seeing pictures that bring it home for us. THANK YOU so much for these.
Love you……….Martha

Spoons Cafe Loves to Dessert You

Posted on May 15th, 2008 by Kate. Filed in Commercial

Yeah, I said it. I am feelin’ kinda punny today. You should be used to my weird sense of humor by now.

Anywho, the fabulous Spoons Cafe asked me to photograph their desserts for a new menu and some promotional material. As if they needed to promote anything since they are totally packed 24/7, but who would pass up photographing such glorious treats?!

Feast your eyes on this. If you weren’t already in need of an afternoon snack, you will be now. Hope you don’t get sugar shocked right through your computer!

I love the cupcake picture! Way to go Mills! Wish I had tht kind of self control around sweets.

Bobby May 16th, 2008 at 2:21 am

Ok, we already know that the human subject is your “absolute best work” and even a masterpiece (I helped, too), BUT the rest of it is friggin LEGEN…wait for it…hope you’re not lactose intolerant…b/c it’s gonna be…DARY!!!!
I need that cupcake, that cupcake needs me. I know I am happily married but I wanna go on match.com, find that cupcake (after we chat online for a few months and meet in a safe place), make one of those cheesey commercials that plays music from Love Actually in the background, and we’ll go live in this cute little bakery in the country and make a baker’s dozen!

Susie M May 16th, 2008 at 6:41 am

Mills and Kate…..those are my girls! Yummy cupcakes….Precious girls! Go Spoons!

Gabrielle May 16th, 2008 at 9:52 am

Sweet Millie, those sweets can’t top you! You are the sweetest cutest model. Love to you, Auntie Gab

chriselda May 16th, 2008 at 1:22 pm

my kid would’ve thrown a MASSIVE fit.
ok. soooo don’t laugh but my next scheduled date to come to D/FW area is in october for the New Kids on the Block concert. and i will need to go to Spoons … and IKEA. you in ?!

Kate May 16th, 2008 at 3:19 pm

Chriselda~~~Actually, Millie didn’t touch anything until we told her she could. She was the perfect angel and blew my mind. Needless to say, she got to pick out a treat, and hers was the pink cupcake! To match her dress, of course!!!

Melanie Classe May 17th, 2008 at 10:13 pm

Very impressed with Mills’ willpower. I’d be divin’ in! They look amazing!

Karen Cupcake May 19th, 2008 at 9:41 am

oooh man.. Now I want a strawberry cupcake!!! Dang! How come Mckinney is so far off my path in Rowlett??? arrrgh!

[…] the out of this world event design, the flowers I have never even heard of, the food that is almost too pretty to eat, and the music that pulls me into each wonderful moment…yeah, all of that is pretty sweet. […]

Why, you ask? I dunno. It’s not even like I have ever ridden one before. Actually, they kinda scare me…and I like it. They are sleek, fast, and even have accessories. What’s not to love?

Michael Owen :: Part One

Posted on April 24th, 2008 by Kate. Filed in Commercial

A few months ago, Mike hired me to do the photography for his new brochures and advertising materials. He has a very interesting approach which we both felt was a great fit for Juxtapose Photography. As a financial planner, he is a very professional guy. However, a large part of who he is lies in his hobby…motorcycles. He actually hired me for TWO shoots so that he could have more materials to market to bikers. VERY COOL and ORIGINAL. Our shoots were tons o’ fun, and it was a pleasure to work with Mike and his friends.

Here are a few of my faves from the first shoot at his office.

I’m assuming that because this post is filed in “commercial” that it was less of a personal venture and more of a super-exciting-and-amazingly-fun shoot for some hugely famous company/publication…

Jammin’ for the Elizabeth Toon Foundation

Posted on March 4th, 2008 by Kate. Filed in Commercial, Music

Last Thursday night, Poor David’s Pub hosted the Elizabeth Toon Foundation Benefit, featuring Brice Beaird, Tom Douglas, and Tom Faulkner. I was asked to document the evening as well as capture some key shots of Brice for his website, and couldn’t say no.

Live music and a really good cause…I am so thankful that I do what I do. Life is good.

I grew up with Poor Davids Pub (the one on lower greenvile) in my everyday vocabulary! My friend’s dad owns the place. I’ve not been down to the new one yet but your photos make me SO excited to go! It looks HUGE! I mean, the last place was decent size but that’s awesome! Beautiful pictures, as always, Kate!
